Why do developers and designers of websites in Asia like to open a new window for outgoing links and more importantly why do the producers and the people in charge of the web allow this to happen. Look at Yahoo! Hong Kong and Yahoo! Korea, the same is true for sites from China too Yahoo! China and Baidu, Naver and Daum, search for anything and click the result, and there goes an annoying pop up window. Other websites besides the notable search engines are producing this effect.
On top of that, the annoying advertisements from them, the likes of floating ads, loads of Flash ads, sounds, movies, etc. It’s annoying. A lot of the usability issues are overlooked here, they tend to make everything eyecatching, form over function. Maybe the culture in Asia is that a new popup window will make things easier for them, I mean, if I use one word to describe Asia, namely the places I mentioned, it’d be CONVENIENCE. What’s more convenient than clicking the X on the top right corner of your brower window when you are done browsing that page. But for me, that’s just simply annoying.
