job search 2.0

I find myself rummaging through the job boards both in Hong Kong and the US recently. Maybe I am in the market for a new job or just simply trying out those cool not-so-new job services sites like simplyhired, indeed and recruit.net. I (and I mean a bit using microscopic measurements) or recruit.net here when they launched in HK. Back then, I never really took it for a test run but of course, times change and I’ve looked through only the top level of their service, the basic job search.

Recruit.net is nice in that I don’t have to look through the 5+ other job boards they have here in Hong Kong. But when you actually perform searches it doesn’t perform all that well. At least in my case and my case being an IT job search. For anyone who doesn’t know much about the IT job market in Hong Kong, I can only say that the market is thinner than a slice of wheat bread. And I can’t really say recuit.net doesn’t do its job correctly either because it does, just not to my fancy.

I did a search for “web manager” hoping to get some results for web project manager, web producer, web program manager, you know along those lines. Click that link above and well, you get a bunch of other things like Finance Manager, Event Manager, Revenue Manager, etc. All of the sudden, they’ve switched my career for me and now seeking an accounting/finance job. This could be a result of a lack of IT jobs here and so they search for jobs matching manager and web. The results were useless to say the least. Now, you know, if you ever want to make it in Hong Kong, stick to a career in Accounting or Finance. That’s where the jobs are and will always be. Forget about IT, really.

They could improve the search a bit to start. I can’t go into the details since I have no clue about the algorithms involved and it’s beyond me but they can research that and return more specific results. If there are a few jobs, they should just return those specific ones instead of the current implementation.

In comparison, a search from the US sites (Simplyhired, Indeed) for the same keyword gave me what I wanted. If you were wondering, I miss working in Glendale and living in Los Angeles.

Angus - thanks for using our site. As you correctly deduced this is purely due to the number of job matches in the Hong Kong market.

It’s also unreasonable to compare searching a job in Hong Kong to the whole of the US.

If you narrow down the location on US sites you will see the same problems: http://www.indeed.com/jobs?q=web+manager&l=Alabama&radius=

A better comparison is a search encompassing our whole site not just Hong Kong which returns more relevant jobs across Asia.

Your comments and suggestions have been noted.
    Thanks.
