The Asia Web 2.0 Conference

Found this Asia Web 2.0 Conference Brief from the British Computer Society that will be held in Hong Kong on January 19, 2007. The Web 2.0 hype ain’t over people, it’s still lingering in Hong Kong (the people here are a bit slow to catch on to the web, they tend to focus on where the real money is, the stock market and the real estate market. To be honest, people here will never get it and no one is willing to invest here!).

Anyway, it’s nice to see a nice little, kind of official** Web 2.0 Conference here in Hong Kong. There hasn’t been too many news about Web 2.0 here but there are innovators here for sure. What would be even cooler is if they have some of these Web 2.0 innovators from HK (EditGrid, Bullpoo, aNobii, Recruit.net) speak at this conference (if they haven’t arranged it already), it would be worthwhile for the investment community, business community and the entrepreneur wannabes (like myself) to really get an idea of how it’s done in Asia, but again, this is Hong Kong, where it’s all about the glitz and glamour of brands (yes, we are brand whores), so you’ll probably hear a lot marketing spiel from the likes Google, Yahoo, MSN, etc., instead.

** When I say kind of official, I am wondering if O’Reilly or CMP or whoever has allowed them to use their Service Mark, since it’s a conference and all. You know the whole fiasco they had previously with some Web 2.0 Conference in Ireland or somewhere in Europe.

Thanks for passing this news along. I keep my eyes open for the Web 2.0 trend in Hong Kong and guess this is a good sign.

It seems this conference format is different to other conferences, where web 2.0 companies and entrepreneurs are the spotlight. This is extremely important for local innovations and attracting investment opportunities.

A good start, but I feel the organizers don’t fully get it yet.

Hi Leon, nice to meet you.

I agree. I think this is more like an educational conference than anything else. I cannot say if there will actually be a conference because I couldn’t find the event listing on the Hong Kong Convention Center site and a bunch of stuff in the brief mentions “Pontential…” We will have to wait and see.
