Since my start in covering Web 2.0 in Hong Kong back in June 2006, I’ve seen the number of web startups shoot up in a year’s time. I started with meeting two startups, then three, then organizing meetups for five startups and now, eleven and counting. The numbers are minute compared to those in China or the US, but this is big step in Hong Kong.

I met the newer startups and caught up with the existing ones at a gathering last Sunday. All in all, it was great to see a group of talented and outgoing individuals setting the path for others to follow. Founders, cofounders, CEO, directors, journalist, enthusiasts from Bullpoo, EditGrid, aNobii, jijija, Roompage, Moochi, Yahoo! were abound. For those who are keeping track, the majority of startups are community based (9), while the others are productivity in form of online spreadsheet (1) and vertical search for jobs (1).

And this begs this question. When will Mobile 2.0 be arriving in Hong Kong, has it arrived or will it ever arrive?

Web 2.0 Hong Kong

As more and more startups and interests here, I see new opportunities to get others involved, possibly including internet companies, local VCs and the user community. I will gradually look into and work on any possibilities to enhance the state of the web in Hong Kong. Stay tuned!

For those who are part of a web or mobile startup in Hong Kong or China and are interested in participating in future gatherings, drop me an email, angus at anguslau dot com. I’d love to hear and learn about your startup and spread it to the world!

Shout outs to Uta for her excellent coordination and location! Rock on.

@j.ying i believe we were worried about space limitations which is why only the startups were there. it's not meant to be secretive as our goal is to get HK people involved in web entrepreneurship.

If you are interested in the latest gathering, it's here http://www.852signal.com/2008/06/12/event-start...

  • This is a new Web 2.0 Wedding Portal targeting for HK and China newlyweds. Please take a look when you have time!
  • Well, it looks like in HK more women are represented in the Web startups than in Korea. In a similar meeting in Korea, I would say we'd be fortunate to have one woman..!
