Hong Kong’s first Web 2.0 conference went over quite well yesterday. The turnout was better than I expected, with over 200 attended from various companies of different sectors. Corporations were out in full force at the conference, there were representatives from Sony, AT&T, Cathay Pacific, Hutchinson Whampoa, HSBC, Yahoo!, Microsoft, UBS and a number of others I didn’t bother to notice. It’s unfortunate that I did not see too many startups and VCs out and about.

The conference sessions were less than spectacular, but it was probably about right for the audience. The sessions proved to be educational in terms of describing Web 2.0 rather than educational in terms of offering insights of the next generation web, what’s hot now, what we can expect down the road. So there were presentations on what Web 2.0 is, how it is different from Web 1.0, building communities, user generated content, the use of blogs as a marketing/PR tool. There were couple sessions which they could do without because I found them to be sales pitches and that took away some good spots for possibly other useful topics that could be discussed.

To sum up, the conference was a good start to further bring Web 2.0 awareness to the public and it seemed to have provided a platform for companies who may find Web 2.0 features useful in their business services. And blogging live using a PSP isn’t the brightest of ideas.

  • Dear Angus,

Hope you would also be interested in our up-coming event "Nurturing and Commercializing Online Communities Forum", which would be held in Shanghai on Nov. 28 and 29.

This event could be ranked as the first Chinese Event discussing Web 2.0's impact on traditional business. Very interesting, we have already attracted several delegates from various industries, some of which we never thought would be interested!

If you are interested in this event, please e-mail me for more information or give us a call by 0086-21-6229 1717.

Hope we can meet with you here in Shanghai.
