At the Asia Web 2.0 conference last week, there was this one startup running around showing their site. The product they were showing around was GownFull, otherwise pronounced as Kung Fu. It looked like a pretty neat service/tool.

It’s a pretty simple concept, take Input Method Editor (IME) available as part of the Microsoft Windows OS or other third party software that are dependent on a specific computer and free it so you can use it anywhere (with a browser and internet connection). The tool utilizes bookmarklet so all you need to do is go to their website and drag their link into your browser’s bookmarks toolbar and you are ready to input your language (only Chinese is available now) in any website.

The system is built using AJAX along with PHP and still early in the development phase so their demo has limited functionality, such as, certain Chinese input method works better than others, layering issues with CSS, and only Chinese and Greek are available at the moment.

This can become a very handy tool for many and hope to see more languages be implemented real soon.

    Hello Angus,

I am the core developer of Gown Full (the thin boy demonstrating our ajax IME with his big notebook in Web 2.0 conference, you might have remember me). I feel excited when I see your report on our IME because our work have attracted some people attention. When your report is shown on your blog, I started to search in Google and I found that many bloggers started discussing our IME. You help us a lot. Thank you very much.

    Wong Hang.
