AliveNotDead is a niche online community bringing together musicians, filmmakers, models and other artists with their fans. Founded by serial entrepreneurs and co-founders of Rotten Tomatoes, the site has potential to lure users to their community due to its star power appeal, with notable users from Hollywood movie stars like Kelly Hu and Jet Li and local celebrities, Daniel Wu and Josie Ho, and others. The site has been around for a while but it appears to have shifted into an online community earlier this year.
The site have standard features found on other popular social networks (like MySpace, Friendster, etc), such as blog, photo album, friends list, events, internal mail, RSS feeds and guestbook. They have a “Fans of” section which is like favorites, that lets users track their favorite artists (and other members) with automatic updates, and likewise, the artist will know who their fans are and can choose to interact with them. As with all social networks out there, the content is mostly generated by the community. The artists and users share just about anything through their blogs, videos and photo albums. There is also a forum categorized for each artist where fans can discuss with each other and artists promote their events.
The site has three languages already available, English, Traditional and Simplified Chinese to serve both Hong Kong and China, as well as the large Chinese communities overseas. Most of the blog posts by the artist are in English but some are translated into a Chinese version as well, in Traditional or Simplified, reaching the large Chinese audience in China.
In building this type of community, it would be great if they can promote in-person gathering for fans and artists to do some meet and greet or other fun activities.
