Flickr tour hits Hong Kong
Written by Angus Lau July 31st, 2007 . Flickr and their community manager, Heather Champ (I’m assuming) will be in town on August 30th. This may or may not be an interesting visit in that Flickr news regarding censorship has been around the blogosphere since the launch of Hong Kong (Chinese) site. I am hoping there won’t be a massive uproar on censorship that will take away the fun of this gathering when users and Flickr come together, but definitely would like to hear some feedback from Heather Champ and/or the local Flickr community manager as to why they’ve been pretty hush hush about the recent events of Oiwan Lam.
The case of Oiwan Lam, detailed here and here has questioned Flickr’s decision to censor content from local users. From what I’ve read, it appears Flickr have, so far, left Oiwan in the dark. This is a surprise to me since they’ve been pretty transparent with their community (at least in the US) and that is why Flickr is flourishing the way they have been.
Quite possibly, this is being handled by the local Flickr/Y! HK personnel and for them to ignore the communication with the community is just asking for trouble. If that’s the case, then they should read up on previous community events in the US. You know, the revolt at Digg and JPG Magazine too. That’s the fun stuff that happens when there’s no communication with your community.
