Inside Hong Kong’s web community

Having seen the success of the previous community gathering (via blogs/flickr), it’s great to know that there is a growing community in Hong Kong. Within each community, there are multiple groups who hold their own gatherings regularly. You have the bloggers, the internet marketers, internet professionals and web entrepreneurs as groups that hold their own gatherings, without participation from others. So it was amazing to converge all these groups together, all in one location. It’s nice to see the community come together nicely.

I have to admit that at times, I do get bogged down on how I can improve web community in Hong Kong and each time, I do manage to scrap up valuable sources to help me improve the scene in Hong Kong. Without a doubt, having found out Jeremiah Owyang was coming to Hong Kong got me excited and previously, Net Jacobsson also provided a spark for me to help bring together Hong Kong’s web entrepreneurs. These are very successful individuals who have fueled me to push out some community goodness for everyone. There are so many events that we can launch here in addition to the usual gatherings like Lunch 2.0, BarCamp, BloggerCon and countless others. It’s time to get companies in Hong Kong involved and we need to knowledge share more within the growing community.

Speaking of BarCamp, I am excited to announce that the planning for Hong Kong’s first BarCamp is in the works. There has been interest from members from other groups, like Napoleon Biggs at Web Wednesday, Steve Fleischer at Flying Tiger Web Design and Aaron Farr at Cubicle Muses. I’ll be joining them (when I am back in HK the first week of October) to organize a rocking BarCamp.

As for Lunch 2.0, we’ll have to wait and see, I did read Jeremiah ’s recommendation to Outblaze to host the first Lunch 2.0 in HK and they are definitely in the position to do so. I personally do not see too many, if any, Hong Kong companies, large and small, willingly throwing a few hundred (HKD) bucks to have some lunch for the community or “strangers” to them, Y! HK might be an exception. I believe corporations here are still unwilling to work with the community and cheap and I’m sure most of them would rather see that money go into the advertising budget instead (do correct me on this if I am wrong). Money is always an issue in Hong Kong, that’s all they care about. It’ll take time before they realize the importance of getting the community involved. We’ll changed that.

Yeah, I’m still trying to figure out the relationship between industry and community there in Hong Kong. Good to see some events starting to happen though.
